Impact Stories

Our work is driven by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their
background. Our Impact Stories shine a light on the journeys of the individuals and communities we support
— from overcoming barriers to employment to building confidence, skills, and brighter futures.

From Uncertainty to Opportunity

Nikita’s journey with Positive Youth Pathways
began with questions and hesitation — and grew into confidence,
connection, and a vision for the future.

Youth Programme

When Nikita joined our Positive Youth Pathways project, he had only recently arrived in the UK. Everything felt new and unfamiliar, and like many young people in his situation, he was looking for ways to connect, learn, and grow.

Through the project, Nikita took part in a variety of activities that helped him feel more at home in his new surroundings. He regularly attended our English workshops, where he not only improved his language skills but also gained a deeper understanding of British culture, values, and everyday life.

A key turning point for Nikita was a trip to the Yorkshire Dales, where he experienced the beauty of the British countryside and had the chance to connect with others in a relaxed, inspiring environment. The trip gave him a new sense of belonging and helped him see how he could become part of his new community. He also enjoyed career and education sessions, where he explored how to build a future in the UK — including learning how to start Youth Programme an online business.

But it wasn’t all about learning. Nikita made lasting friendships through fun social events like bowling, board games, and decorating gingerbread houses. He also took part in cultural trips to York, Manchester, and London, and had his first taste of traditional afternoon tea at Harewood.

Reflecting on his experience, Nikita shared: “Before the project, I didn’t feel confident speaking English or making new friends. Now, I feel much more open, and I know I have a place here.”

By the end of the programme, Nikita had grown in confidence, expanded his social circle, and started imagining a more positive future for himself in the UK. His story is one of resilience, growth, and the power of community.

FROM ENGINEERING TO IT: AMINA’S JOURNEY TO A DIGITAL CAREER
Amina is a civil engineering graduate with hands-on experience as an architectural draftsman and interior designer.

Over time, her passion shifted toward the world of IT and data analysis. She has since been proactively building her digital skillset through training in Power BI, SQL, and Python, and most recently completed the Digital Skills for Work training at PATH Yorkshire.

Currently unemployed, Amina is actively seeking beginner, apprentice, or juniorlevel roles in the IT field. She is eager to apply her analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities in a professional environment and start her career in the digital sector.

Reflecting on her experience at PATH Yorkshire, Amina says the training has been instrumental in helping her navigate the modern job market. “The CV and cover letter writing sessions helped me present my skills professionally, especially for IT roles. I also learned how to effectively use job portals and improved my digital skills in Microsoft Office and other online tools essential for the workplace.”

The training gave Amina a better understanding of how to search for roles online and gave her the confidence to apply for positions she once found daunting. “I’ve used the guidance to register with Indeed and plan to explore platforms like Find a Job and Reed next. The course really boosted my confidence.” While the course focused on foundational digital and employment skills, Amina sees it as a strong springboard for future growth.

“It’s given me the tools to tailor my applications, communicate professionally online, and adapt to new technologies. I feel better prepared to enter the IT industry and continue developing in more advanced roles as I progress.” With a strong drive to succeed and a growing technical toolkit, Amina is now well positioned to transition into the IT sector and make a meaningful impact.
SPEAKING UP:
HOW YIN GAINED CONFIDENCE THROUGH ESOL

Yin joined the ESOL for Job Seeking course with a desire to improve her English and become more confident in everyday communication. Over the duration of the course, she developed stronger speaking and listening skills, which have had a real impact on her daily life.

Now, Yin feels much more confident talking to her neighbours and engaging in casual conversations — something she previously found challenging. This boost in confidence has helped her feel more integrated into British society and has inspired her to become more active in her community. She has taken a meaningful next step by arranging to start volunteering at a local charity shop — a move that will not only give her valuable experience but also continue to build her communication skills in real-world settings.

Yin’s journey is a great example of how language learning can empower individuals, open doors to new opportunities, and strengthen communities.

“The course helped me improve my speaking and listening skills. I now feel more confident talking to my neighbours and making new friends. I can use more words and talk about the date, time, and my hobbies.”
NEW BEGINNINGS:
IMRAN’S PATH TO CONNECTION AND OPPORTUNITY
When Imran joined the Positive Youth Pathways project, he was studying ESOL and had little contact with others in his community. He was looking to improve his English, build confidence, and connect with new people.

Through one-to-one mentoring and group activities like English for Life and Work in the UK, British Culture and Values, and Coffee and Talk afternoons, Imran gained valuable communication skills, cultural understanding, and confidence. He especially enjoyed the interactive sessions and shared, “This project is very interesting.”

Taking part in trips and social activities helped him build friendships and feel more included. Imran now feels motivated and supported to pursue his goals — including gaining a UK driving licence and starting an online business. He’s already signed up for the project’s upcoming business workshops.

Imran’s story shows how community-based learning can empower young people to grow, connect, and look ahead with confidence.

FROM CLASSROOM TO CONFIDENCE: RUSSOM FINDS HIS VOICE IN EVERYDAY LIFE

For Russom, joining the ESOL for Social Conversation course was more than just a chance to improve his English — it was a step toward greater independence and connection with the world around him.

Throughout the course, Russom’s confidence grew noticeably. One of the highlights for him was a visit to Leeds City Museum, where he especially enjoyed seeing the animals. The experience helped him feel more engaged with local culture and life in Leeds.

Russom now speaks for himself at the Jobcentre, no longer needing an interpreter — a powerful indicator of his progress. His improved English also allows him to communicate with his gym trainer, helping him stay active and socially connected. These everyday moments show how learning the language has made Russom feel more integrated and empowered in his community.

Reflecting on the course, Russom shared:
“I like our class because we practise speaking. I feel more confident contacting people, and I’m very happy in this class.”

Russom’s story is a reminder that learning English isn’t just about language — it’s about building confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging. His journey shows how focused, supportive learning can open doors to a fuller, more independent life.
