PATH Yorkshire has successfully sustained its core projects including the PATH Traineeship Scheme and the Positive Action Graduate Scheme for three decades.

Due to the yearly high volume of interests and over subscription of PATH projects every year, we looked at other collaborative projects with trusted institutions which may have a limited life span.

While most of PATH projects and programmes are ongoing, two of recently ended projects are the POWRS and TRIF projects.

PATH Outreach and Work Retention Support (POWRS) – funded by The Big Lottery Fund

POWRS was a three-year project engaging with over 200 Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) young people ages 16 – 24 years old who were not in education, employment or training (NEET) to raise their aspirations, gain skills and fulfil their potentials. The project provided young participants Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG), employability training, one-to-one mentoring and work coaching. Employer visits, work experience and volunteering opportunities were also arranged for young participants to gain work skills, meet employers and build their confidence within a real working environment. Challenging outdoor activities were organised to provide a fun and innovative ways of learning team building skills, encouraging health and well-being and improving their social skills. Young people also benefited from being able to train on accredited courses and gain qualifications relevant to the work/careers of their choice.

The POWRS project also provided three interactive Diversity training, attended by a total of 79 employers, using professional drama presentations with audience participation which was effective in driving awareness of the benefits of staff diversity in businesses and reinforcing corporate social responsibilities.

POWRS project was oversubscribed and PATH achieved over 100% of all targets and project outcomes included 37% of participants gaining sustainable employment, 15% completed new qualifications, 7% completed their training as Mentors and able to support the peer mentoring sessions for the project while all participants accessed employability training and work experience placements.  The POWRS project ended in June 2014.

Tackling Race Inequality Fund (TRIF)  – funded by the Community Development Foundation and the Communities and Local Government

The TRIF project developed Pre-Apprenticeship Programme for 35 young Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) ages 16-24 years old, who were not in education, employment or training (NEET).  PATH developed a 6-months Pre-Apprenticeship programme and arranged the placements with SME employers in Leeds and Bradford.

The project promoted equality of opportunities for disadvantaged young people including those who lacked work experience, low self-esteem, low achievers in school and unsuccessful in apprenticeship applications elsewhere. The TRIF project ended in June 2011.

Engineering Taster Days

A 5-Day Work Shadowing Programme (with Mentoring) with Interserve Engineering Services (IES).

The purpose of the Programme is to give an insight and provide some hands on experience of the Mechanical and Electrical sector of Interserve Engineering Services.

NCFE PX2 (Pacific Institute) Training Course

The PX2 course was a recognised learning route for the Level 2 Award in Developing Effective Thinking Skills (QCF) in England and delivered by PATH Training Coordinators through the awarding body NCFE.

PX2 was designed and aimed at young people, ages 14-19, to become more aware of themselves, be able to set their goals and respond to the challenge of building strength of character, promote positive communication, and equip them with effective thinking skills.


The REAL+ Project was in partnership with Igen, aimed to engage and support young people (ages 16-19) into training, education and employment. The project provided trainees:

• FREE Accredited training and NCFE qualifications in CV Writing and Developing Effective Thinking (PX2)
• Work experience placement/ on-the-job training
• Employability Support from designated PATH Advisers, to include job search, applications and interview techniques.

After I completed my GCSEs, I joined PATH’s REAL+ Programme. I attended the PX2 Training which made me more confident about myself, my skills and abilities which I can offer to employers. They also trained me in CV Writing and arranged my work experience in a city centre retail shop.  All my training was free and they paid for my travel expenses. I gained two new qualifications, on-the-job training and made some new friends.   Now, I am on my first full time job. Thanks, PATH. A Mahmoob
